William Henry Pratt (23 de noviembre de 1887, Londres – 2 de febrero de 1969, Hampshire), conocido como Boris Karloff, fue un actor británico famoso por sus papeles en películas de terror.

Muy aficionado al teatro, Karloff abandonó la carrera diplomática para la que se estaba preparando, y se marchó a Canadá a los 21 años para intentar buscar fortuna en el mundo de la interpretación. En Ontario se unió a una compañía teatral, cambiado ya su nombre  por el de Boris Karloff.
Poco a poco iba afianzándose como actor teatral, generalmente interpretando papeles secundarios, girando por diversas compañías por todo el territorio norteamericano. A la vez que iba alternando con otros trabajo en granjas, de camionero, 
En 1916 logró debutar en el cine como figurante en "The dumb girl of Portici", una película protagonizada por Anna Paulova y Rupert Julian.

Durante la época del cine mudo, Boris Karloff intervino en numerosos títulos, siempre como secundario, siendo una de sus películas más destacadas la versión de "El último de los mohicanos" (1920), dirigida por Clarence Brown y Maurice Tourneur.

Su debut en el cine hablado fue con "The Unholy Night" (1929), un film dirigido por Lionel Barrymore. Con la película de Howard Hawks, "El Código Penal" (1931), consiguió la fama.

Cuando Bela Lugosi y Tod Browning estrenaron Drácula consiguieron poner de moda el género fantástico y de terror en el Hollywood de aquella época. James Whale quería filmar una adaptación de la novela de Mary Shelley, "Frankenstein" (1931), y deseaba a Bela Lugosi para el papel de monstruo.
Lugosi rechazó el papel alegando que no le interesaba aparecer sin diálogos y totalmente maquillado, ya que no le reconocerían sus fans. Whale pensó en Karloff, que aceptó sin dudarlo poniéndose en manos del experto en maquillaje Jack Pierce.
El arte de Pierce, la impresionante creación de Boris Karloff y la realización de Whale consumaron una obra maestra que hizo de Karloff uno de los rostros más populares de los años 30 dentro del género de terror y actor fetiche para la Universal.

La década resulto memorable para Boris dentro y fuera del cine terrorífico.

En los años 40, 50 y 60, Boris Karloff continuó trabajando a destajo, tanto en el teatro (donde estrenó "Arsenic and old lace"), como en el cine y la televisión.

Boris Karloff siguió trabajando hasta poco antes de su fallecimiento, despidiendo su impresionante trayectoria artística con la mediocre película "Invasión Siniestra".
Karloff nos dejaba, a causa de un enfisema pulmonar, el 2 de febrero de 1969. Tenía 81 años.
